HYBRID CABBAGES

Cabbages can be grouped into two main classes.Namely hybrids and non-hybrids.

The non-hybrid class includes varieties such as copenhagen market, sugar loaf, Golden acre and prize drumhead.

These are the varieties that most farmers have identified with for a long time. Primarily because they mature early are softer and tastier.

The second class is that of hybrids. The varieties in this class are.

Gloria F1.H Ideal cabbage for warm areas due to heat tolerance. Today grown by farmers in all parts of the country.
Pruktor F1.H. Is much softer, tastier and more tolerant to leaf diseases.Ideal for the cooler regions where diseases are more prevalent.
Riana F1.H. Suitable for both the cool and drier areas. Commands a fairly good market due to its rich green colour.
Field winner F1.H. Is the most recent release.

Although farmers were of the opinion that hybrid seed is expensive, today many acknowledge the fact that hybrids come with various benefits.

CABBAGE PRUKTOR F1

Pruktor F1 is a medium early hybrid characterized by a perfect round head, which is solid. The outer leaves are small, exhibiting a normal green color.

It has a small core and the green color extends towards the core.

It is highly tolerant to black rot disease and withstands long distance transportation.

KALE 1000 HEADED.

Popularly known as Sukuma Wiki. It is a strong plant with broad leaves which branches heavily and can be harvested for a long period including the dry season.

Legumes

BEANS MWITEMANIA GLP 92

A mid- early popular bean type that grows in all altitudes. GLP 2 yields about 500kg per acre and matures within 90 days. The pods do not shatter easily giving extended protection to grains.

BEANS WAIRIMU DWARF

This is an extra early dwarf bean type that grows well in most ecological zones, but best suited in medium to dry areas. It matures within 70 days giving yields of up to 500kg per acre. The grains are of excellent eating quality.

Miscellenous Crop

OKRA CLEMSON SPINELESS.

This is a hardy plant growing well in dry areas especially under irrigation. Clemson spineless is high yielding (2.5 tons per acre) giving high quality pods that sell very well in the export market. It can be picked within 75 days of planting.

Onion (Allium Cepa)

ORIENT F1

Orient F1 is a Bombay Red type hybrid characterized by uniform growth and maturity .It has very strong tolerance to Downey mildew diseases and pink rot but most important is the long shelf life (up to 5 months) without losing quality. If performs well in the cool to hot regions like mweiga, meru and isiolo. It is a heavy yeilder with approximately 20-22 ton per hectare. It gives medium to large size bulbs

This hotpepper variety is bullet shaped, erect and has upright conical fruits that are 5-6 cm long and 2-3 cm in diameter at its shoulders. Its flesh is medium thick and pungent. It offers continuous harvest ands suitable for the fresh market and drying. It is also good for export.

California wonder is a mild pepper variety that is ideal for the local market. Its fruit can be harvested over a long period. The fruits are pendant, thick walled, uniform, blocky and compact

TOMATO RIO GRANDE

Rio Grande is a determinate processing tomato that grows best in mid-land and lowlands.

It has potential for high yields if well managed.

Rio Grande fruits are more solid than those of Cal-J are. The plant is slightly bushy, but requires no staking.
