HIGHLAND VAREITIES:H6213:Late maturity hybrid, released in 2002. It out yields H614D by 36% and does well in highland areas of altitude 1700 - 2100 m above sea level. Does extremely well in all areas where H614D, H625, H626, H627 and H628 are grown. This variety is resistant to lodging ear rot, rust, gls, stem and leaf blight. Yields an average of 52 bags per acre.H6212:Late maturity hybrid, released in 2001. It is shorter than H6213. It has been developed for the cooler highland areas of T/Nzoia, U/Gishu, Nakuru, Laikipia, Kisii, Nandi, Kericho, Bungoma, Nyahururu, Mt Elgon, Kiambu and Meru.This variety yields an average of 51 bags per acre.H6210:Released in 2001. This variety performs well in altitudes 1700 - 2100m above sea level. Grown in T/Nzoia, U/Gishu, tea-zones of Kiambu, Nyeri, Meru and Nyandarua districts.This variety yields up to 50 bags per acre with good agronomic practices and is resistant to lodging, ear rot, rust, gls, stem and leaf blight. H9401:This variety performs best at highland area of altitude 1700-2100m asl. It is a tall variety (420 cm) but has prop roots for better support hence resistant to lodging. It has a long "stay green" factor which makes it good for livestock feed and silage making. Yields an average of 48 bags per acre.H629:Released 2001. Target highland areas 1700-2400m asl: This vareity performs best in the cool wet zones of Nandi, U/Gishu, T/Nzoia, Bungoma, Kisii and Kericho districts. Yield an average of 48 bags per acre.Has a good husk cover and very resistant lodging, ear rot, rust, gls, stem and leaf blight. H628:Was released tot he market for sale in 1999. It is a very popular variety in the high altitude maize growing areas of Kenya and does best in altitudes 1500-2100m asl. It is a tall variety with an average height of 420 cm. It yield up to 46 bags of grain per acre and is resistant to most foliar diseases and pests.H627:It is a popular variety in the high altitude (1500-2100m asl) maize growing areas of East Africa. It is higher yielding than H614 so long as there is adequate rainfall. It yields an average of 44 bags of grain per acre. The average height is 386 cm. The variety lodges but has fair husk cover. It is tolerant to most leaf diseases, blight and rust.H626:Popular variety that yields an average of 42 bags per acre. Grows to a height of 286 cm and quite often produces more than one cob from the apex. It has a good husk cover though some may be bare tipped. The variety ahs good resistance to lodging. H614D:This variety is the most popular variety in the high altitude maize growing areas of Kenya. It is also becoming increasingly popular in the medium and high altitude areas of Uganda and Tanzania. It is good for ugali and has a sweet taste when roasted. It is tolerant to weevil attack and hence has a long shelf life. This variety hardly lodges and is tolerant to blight and to most leaf and ear diseases. It yields an average of 38 bags of grain per acre.
