MEDIUM ALTITUDE MAIZE VARIETIES
H 511:
Is a popular variety in medium altitudes and low rainfall
areas of Kenya. It is also becoming popular in medium
altitude zones of other East African countries. At
these zones, the variety yields higher and tolerant
to diseases and pests. The average height is238 cm
with leaves that are green and stem colour is green.
The variety tassels about a83 days after planting.
The tassels are light-purple and silks are purple
and produced 91 days after planting.
ADAPTABILITY: The variety is adapted
to medium altitudes of Kenya between 1000 - 1800m
above sea level.
AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: H 511
matures fairly early, 4-5 months after planting and
yields moderately 16 bags of grain per acre. The variety
is fairly resistant to lodging but susceptible to
head rot (30%) and to streak disease. It is also fairly
susceptible to leaf blights and to rusts.
B 513:
H 513 is a new release for the medium altitude maize
growing areas of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, It is
very high yielding and resistant to foliar diseases
and pests. It grows to a height 328 cm above soil
level. It produces green leaves with green and purple
stems. It also produces cream tassels and cream silks.
ADAPTABILITY: The variety is adapted
to medium altitude areas of East Africa, between 1000m
- 1800m above sea level.
AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: H 513
matures fairly early, 4-6 months after planting and
yields about 20 bags of grain per acre. It produces
semi-dented grains.
